Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has demanded Danny Welbeck to score more goals if he wants to become a top striker.

Welbeck's recent displays has seen heaps of praise placed on him by pundits, fans and fellow players, especially the two performances he gave in the Champions League against Real Madrid.

After scoring at the Bernabeu, Sir Alex Ferguson opted to pick Welbeck over Wayne Rooney in the return leg which brought up much controversy. Yet despite his impressive performances, Robson wants to see the 22-year-old score more goals.

Speaking at the launch of the 'Legends are Back' game between Manchester United and Real Madrid, which will take place at Old Trafford on June 2, Robson said:

"A few of the younger lads have progressed really well this season but it was a measure of how well Danny has come on that the boss put him in the team ahead of Wayne Rooney last week.

"That was such a big decision but Danny has all the attributes you need, apart from being a natural finisher.

"The good thing about it is that is an area you can work on and improve. And I know Danny will do that because he is a keen lad with such a great mentality towards the game."

That strike at the Bernabeu was just one of two goals the England international has scored this year - with defenders Rafael, Patrice Evra and Jonny Evans all above him in the goalscoring charts.

Welbeck was England's top scorer in 2012 and one of England's best players at the World Cup, where he left a disappointing Rooney very much in the shadow.

But on or off the pitch it is Rooney who always grabs the headlines and after being left out in favour of Welbeck against Madrid, it was again Rooney and whether or not he had a future at Old Trafford that was the main talking point.

But Robson has rubbished rumours that Rooney is on the brink of an United exit and sees the decision made by Sir Alex Ferguson as a tactical one - to stop Xabi Alonso from getting on the ball.

"It was a tactical decision, that is all. At big clubs they happen all the time and players have to abide by them," he added.

"I realise the suggestion afterwards is that the boss has run out of patience with Wayne but I don't think that is the case at all.

"Purely and simply, he was trying to find the best way of getting into the next round and, but for one decision by the referee, I am sure it would have worked."
