Manchester City have been tracking one of the men looking to down Chelsea in the Europa League on Thursday.
According to a report from the Daily Express, Roberto Mancini has had his scouts watching Steaua Bucharest defender Vlad Chiriches.
It claims the Etihad Stadium chief sees the Romania international as a more affordable option to Kolo Toure and claim the Ivory Coast man is liekly to leave in the summer.
Joleon Lescott has also seen his place in the Manchester City starting XI taken by impressive youngster Matija Nastasic.
The 23-year-old has been very impressive in Bucharest’s run in the Europa League, scoring a brilliant equaliser in the last round to take the tie with Ajax to extra time.
Chiriches helped keep Fernando Torres quiet in Bucharest last week where Chelsea fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat in the first leg of their last 16 clash.
Mancini’s interest in the young defender could be a signal he is ready to overhaul his squad after a disappointing defence of their Premier League title, which looks to have failed under the charge of Manchester United this season.
The report suggests Manchester City would have some serious competition to sign Chiriches this summer if they decided to go for him.
It credits Russian big-spenders Zenit Petersburg and Anzhi Makhachkala with an interest, as well as Serie A side AC Milan.
