Mascherano praises Barcelona’s recent history
Barcelona news: Argentine defender hails Catalan’s recent trophy exploits as ‘crazy’ but calls for focus
Barcelona star Javier Mascherano has hailed the Catalan’s achievements in the last five years but still insists that they have to remain focussed if they are to remain successful at the highest level.
The Spanish outfit thrashed AC Milan 4-0 on Tuesday evening to recover from a shock 2-0 first-leg Champions League last-16 defeat, but Mascherano has warned his fellow team-mates that they cannot afford any more costly slip-ups.
"What we have achieved in the last five years is crazy. This team is still competitive, and that’s what we should be appreciating," the Argentine told Barca TV.
"We shouldn’t turn one defeat into a tragedy. And neither have we now suddenly entered paradise. We have passed this test, but there are still eight great teams left in the Champions league.
"We have to carry on like that. This club can’t let its arms down.
"Let’s hope there are no more setbacks. We have to make sure we stay on this track, regardless of results."
Questions were being raised about Barcelona’s approach following their first-leg defeat to Milan, their heavy 3-1 Copa del Rey semi-final defeat at the hands of arch-rivals Real Madrid as well as a league defeat to Jose Mourinho’s men.
But that old cliché - form is temporary, class is permanent was clear to see on Tuesday evening as Barca produced a sensational display to annihilate their shell-shocked Milan opponents.
Barcelona’s achievements in the last five years as Mascherano rightly says have been nothing short of incredible. They have won the Primera Liga an astonishing three times and look to be on track for their fourth in fifth years.
They have also have won the Copa del Rey twice, the Spanish Super Cup three times, the UEFA Champions League twice, the UEFA Super Cup twice and the FIFA Club World Cup twice – amassing 14 trophies in just over four campaigns with their sights firmly set on more this season.
