Former Liverpool star relieved at avoiding Premier League reunion

Published 3 Comments

Former Liverpool favourite Dirk Kuyt has expressed relief at avoiding a meeting with either Chelsea or Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League quarter-finals.

Kuyt currently plays for Turkish side Fenerbeche and they booked their place in Friday’s draw after seeing off Vitoria Plzen from Czech Rep 2-1 on aggregate.

Both Spurs and the Blues were in the pot and Kuyt was glad that his team were drawn with Serie A side over a reunion with some old Premier League foes.

“All the teams that are in the quarter finals are hard to beat but we've avoided the teams like Chelsea and Tottenham,” he told NTVSpor

Spurs needed an extra-time Emmanuel Adebayor strike to defeat Inter Milan on away goals at San Siro.

Gareth Bale was suspended but had inspired Andre Villas-Boas’ side to a crushing 3-0 win in the first leg at White Hart Lane.

They missed the Welshman in the return leg and were fortunate to see extra-time after being beaten 3-0 in 90 minutes and 4-1 after 120.

Meanwhile, Chelsea survived something of a scare to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg against Steaua Bucharest.

Goals from Juan Mata, John Terry and Fernando Torres in reply to Vlad Chiriches’ scrappy first half strike meant the Stamford Bridge crowd saw their side progress 3-2 on aggregate.

The quarter-finals will take place on April 4 and 11 with both Chelsea and Spurs playing their first legs at home against Rubin Kazan and FC Basel respectively

Newcastle United booked their place in the draw thanks to Papiss Cisse’s last second winner against Anzhi Makhachkala and will face Portuguese side Benfica.
