A strong Southampton performance saw them to a crucial win over an out of sorts Liverpool side which takes the hosts’ seven points clear of the Premier League relegation zone.
Jay Rodriguez clinched the points with a solo effort just ten minutes from time, the former Burley striker tapped home at the second attempt after seeing his initial strike saved by Brad Jones.
The striker also had a hand in the opener, as he nodded down Gaston Ramirez’s cross for Morgan Schneiderlin to guide into the far corner after just six minutes.
Rickie Lambert should have made it two when he beat the offside trap, but his effort was saved by the legs of Jones.
Lambert did get the goal he craved however as his free-kick wrong-footed Brad Jones in the Liverpool goal with the aid of a deflection off Daniel Sturridge.
Rodriguez could have put the game to bed before half-time but his acrobatic effort flew just over the cross bar.
Philippe Coutinho was sent clear by Glen Johnson, but the onrushing Artur Boruc denied the midfielder to keep the Merseyside outfit at bay.
But Saints' defence was soon breached, as the Brazilian made no mistake soon after as he was in the right place to stroke home after Sturridge’s shot was blocked.
The goal galvanised a below-par Liverpool who came out stronger in the second half, but they were unable to find a way past Boruc in the Southampton goal.
Adam Lallana had a low effort turned round the post before Rodriguez had the final say in a fine home performance as he danced his way through the Liverpool back-line before slotting in the rebound to secure three precious points for the relegation battlers.
