Will Chelsea be satisfied by FA Cup and Europa League double?
Chelsea opinion: Blues would have expected more at the start of the season
Even if Chelsea win the FA Cup and Europa League double this season, it may not be enough to satisfy those associated with the club.
Having ended last season on a high, after being crowned European champions, expectations for this season at Stamford Bridge were high from the supporters, players and certainly from owner Roman Abramovich.
The season has not gone to plan, though. Knocked out of the Champions League in the group stages, well off the pace in the race for the Premier League and seemingly in disarray behind the scenes, the club are in desperate need of success.
However, for a club like Chelsea who are used to challenging for the major trophies, even if they do become FA Cup winners and Europa League winners this season, they will still see it as disappointing.
Most clubs would be happy with success in either of these competitions. Chelsea, it seems, expect more.
Back in August, Chelsea had a very exciting squad with a good mix of young talent and experienced older players. Roberto Di Matteo's surprise exit along with contractual issues with senior players, such as Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole, seem to have taken their toll on the club and some of their performances.
The appointment of Rafael Benitez as interim manager until the end of the season has not helped and has created a certain amount of tension amongst the supporters. Benitez is obviously trying his best but was up against it from the outset.
It is a sign of how far Chelsea have come over the last decade or so to say they would be disappointed with their season, even if they do capture some silverware.
Surely any trophy must be considered a success particularly after the season they have had?
Are Chelsea under the impression that they have the right to challenge for all trophies? Yes, they probably are now and rightly so. However, even the likes of Manchester United know that sometimes a season does not pan out as planned and the capture of any trophy should be considered a success.
A lot of the disappointment comes from within the club itself. Chelsea and Abramovich have become expectant every season and the glory of last season has increased expectation even more. Chelsea should really take stock of what they have achieved recently and be grateful. After all, no team can win everything every year. Every year there are many losers and very few winners.
Realistically, Chelsea should be happy with one trophy after this turbulent season. However, if they fail on all fronts then their disappointment will be justified. This is certainly possible - particularly in the FA Cup, where they face a difficult path to the final.
