Shakhtar Donetsk star Fernandinho was strongly linked with a January transfer window switch to either Manchester City or Manchester United, and the Brazilian has shown the Premier League rivals what they missed by failing to secure his signature.

Fernandinho impressed during the Champions League's group stages as Shakhtar progressed to the knockout phase ahead of more established opposition, Chelsea included, and his form led to apparent interest from some of the continent's top clubs.

Manchester City and Manchester United were both credited with interest in 27-year-old as Roberto Mancini and Sir Alex Ferguson strived to reinforce their respective squads before the transfer deadline.

But no bid was forthcoming for the €20 million-rated midfielder, and Shakhtar will be thankful he stayed in Donetsk following his fine goal in the weekend victory over Chornomorets.

Fernandinho spectacularly slammed in the opener at the Donbass Arena, before Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Luis Adriano completed the scoring to keep Shakhtar on course for the league title.
