A lot of the talk this weekend in the football world has been about the terrible challenge seen by Wigan Athletic’s Callum McManaman but there were some special strikes that deserve attention.
While it is unsurprising that an X-rated challenge becomes the centre of attention, it is a shame that it should overshadow the more enjoyable aspects of the game.
GiveMeFootball have scoured the Internet to bring you five of the best goals to have been scored over the past weekend in the hope that you are as impressed by them as we are.
Remember, we don’t just want to hear what you think of the goals, we are keen for you to share some of the spectacular strike you have seen that we may have missed.
Anyway, here they are, the Goals of the Weekend:
Leon Osman, EVERTON v Manchester City
This was the goal that almost certainly helped the decisive blow to be landed in this season’s Premier League title race. Osman’s delicious early opener put the pressure on Roberto Mancini’s side and they were unable to reply.
Seamus Coleman drove in to the City area and was pushed inside but was allowed time to lay off to Osman standing unmarked 20 yards out. The England international’s left foot strike curled beautifully in to the top corner. Watch here.
François Clerc, SAINT-ETIENNE v Paris St Germain
The wealthy club from France’s capital were cruising and heading for a win that would see them increase their lead at the top of Ligue 1 to seven points. Goals from Javier Pastore and Zlatan Ibrahimovic gave them a two-goal lead inside of 20 minutes.
However, Saint-Etienne are on a decent run and would not be cowed by their more affluent opponents. An own goal from Brazilian defender Alex halved the deficit late in the first half before right-back Clerc levelled it with a beauty, curling into the top corner with the outside of his right boot.
There were ugly scenes following the goal as PSG players confronted Brandao for a late challenge on Thiago Silva in the lead up to the goal. You can see the goal and the challenge here.
Hernando Patiño, DEPORTES QUINDIO v Alianza Petrolera
A bottom of the table clash from Colombia may be a little obscure for many readers but this clash produced one of the best goals you are likely to see for some time.
The 38-year-old midfielder was waiting harmlessly 30 yards out as his side took a corner but the clearing header floated towards him ever so invitingly. Thank goodness he didn’t play safe and do something lame like pass it or cross it back in.
Patiño decided he would hit it and, my word, did he hit it. The veteran absolutely leathered a volley into the top corner with one of the sweetest strikes you are very likely to see. Sadly, the wondergoal wasn’t enough to save his team from defeat and they stay rooted to the bottom of the Primera A. Have a look for yourself above.
Silvio, DEPORTIVO LA CORUÑA v Celta Vigo
Depor are struggling at the bottom of La Liga but they got vital win over their relegation rivals last Friday. A convincing performance saw them run out 3-1 winners at the Riazor, but this game will be remembered by its second goal.
After Riki gave them an early lead the home side were edgy as they tried to hang on to the slender advantage. They needed somebody to step up and ease the tension; step forward their left-back, Silvio.
With a touch over 25 minutes remaining the defender drifted forward as a cross was headed clear and hit the bouncing ball first time from about 25 yards out and watched it fly into the top corner. See it here.
Eden Hazard, CHELSEA v West Ham
The Belgium international is becoming increasingly influential for the Blues, which bodes well for next season, and showed his quality throughout the 2-0 defeat of West Ham at Stamford Bridge.
Frank Lampard scored his 200th Chelsea goal to open the scoring but the standout moment was the blossoming of Hazard’s link play with Juan Mata, which had been brilliant all afternoon.
A lovely one-two over a defender got the 22-year-old into the box where his speed and close control were matched by a decisive finish. Have a look here.
