The Premier League has featured a host of world-class midfielders over the years, but box-to-box midfielders are becoming a dying breed, with technical players playing off the striker like Juan Mata, or holding midfielders such as Sergio Busquets now more common.

Here is a look at the top five complete midfield players currently playing in the Premier League:

5. Frank Lampard | Chelsea

Much like Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard is getting on in his career, but is still easily one of Chelsea's most influential players. He also possesses a brilliant long shot and ability to deliver a great ball from set-pieces. Although he doesn't challenge as fiercely as Gerrard, Lampard isn't afraid to put a foot in. Penalties, usually the curse of all England players, is again a strongpoint of Lampard's, making him an almost complete player.

4. Steven Gerrard | Liverpool

Although he is now getting older, Steven Gerrard still possesses the ability to play the role of box-to-box midfielder. He has been Liverpool's constant driving force for over 10 years, almost single-handedly winning the 2006 FA Cup Final with two stunning volleys and scoring in the penalty shoot-out.

He also scored one of the most famous Champions League goals ever against Olympiakos in stoppage-time on the way to the final in Istanbul, where he scored the first of three goals in that amazing comeback.

Combine his ability to score sensational goals at the most crucial of times with his eye for a pass and a crunching tackle, and you have a worthy England and Liverpool captain.

3. Marouane Fellaini | Everton

The charismatic Belgian has not only achieved cult status with the Everton faithful for his massive afro, but also thanks to his talismanic role in their team.

A daunting physical presence, Marouane Fellaini has taken over the mantle from Tim Cahill as Everton's main scorer from midfield. Although many of his goals come from headers, his surprising finesse on the deck makes him an almost complete attacking player.

He was once a defensive midfielder as well, leaving him with a sound defensive knowledge. The one black mark on his game is his disciplinary record, demonstrated by the three-match ban he received for head-butting Ryan Shawcross.

2. Jack Wilshere | Arsenal

Breaking into the Arsenal first-team at 16 and since becoming their most inspirational player, Jack Wilshere represents England's future.

His enthusiasm for the game is like that of a boy in the school playground, combined with fierce determination and a very gifted technical ability. Although he should score more goals, that is a part if his game that will no doubt improve in the coming years.

1. Moussa Dembele | Tottenham

The Belgium and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder is probably the most complete box-to-box central midfielder in the Premier League.

Combining aggression and a strong challenge in defence with skill, pace and the undoubted ability to go by a man in attack, Dembele has been a revelation since making a deserved switch from Fulham in the summer for £15m. He has a thunderbolt of a left foot to add, and showed he has goals in him by sending Lyon out of the Europa League in the 90th minute.
