Where does David Luiz play his best football?
Chelsea have utilised David Luiz in defence and midfield this season
David Luiz is a big fan's favourite at Chelsea.
However, there's an issue of which position suites the Brazilian the most. Since he arrived at Chelsea, Luiz has been predominantly a central defender partnering the likes of John Terry, Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic.
Recently, however, manager Rafael Benitez has experimented with the Brazilian in the holding midfield role with Frank Lampard and/or Ramires.
Here's a look at where he is best suited and why.
As a defender, Luiz seems perfect for Chelsea. This is because he has the speed to cover for John Terry and the Englishman has the awareness to cover for Luiz's ambition when he marauds forward.
However, when he does this, it leaves Chelsea extremely short at the back and the Blues have conceded many goals when he has attempted to play out from the back and take on the whole team.
His style is definitely better suited to play in midfield. However, the vision that David Luiz has can be fantastic for a centre back. The long passes he plays are perfect for getting the strikers in on goal. Playing in midfield, his passes will have to be limited as his style moving forward, short passes will be more important.
Fortunately for Chelsea, Luiz can also be used in the full back positions if injuries become an issue. However, he has not been used in the position at all since his arrival at Stamford Bridge.
As a midfielder, Luiz has shown how good he really is. He has less pressure on him to keep possession as if he does lose it, Chelsea are not caught on the break. He can also break up play and bring others into the game. He gives Chelsea an extra attacking option, something John Obi Mikel doesn't.
The only issue that could be in abundance for Chelsea is that when Luiz goes forward, it limits the attacking options for Frank Lampard. What makes this worse is that David Luiz is very inconsistent with his shooting. Either the ball will hit the back of the net, or it will hit Row Z. Whereas, with Frank Lampard, he is more reliable with his longer shots. I'm sure every Chelsea fan would prefer Lampard on the end of rolling ball than David Luiz.
In conclusion, it would probably be better for Chelsea to use David Luiz in the midfield role as it would be more important for them to not be left short at the back and concede silly goals.
