Video: Referee awards phantom goal in Quintanar del Rey v Toledo match
The Premier League have announced their plans to introduce goal-line technology in time for next season, with the intention of providing match officials with the assistance of video replays should certain instances be missed by the naked eye.
This advance in equipment available to referees will make officials in the upper echelons of the game the envy of those further down the league structure, with such technology not available to everyone in the same profession.
That is very much the case down in the depths of the Spanish league, where the referee in an encounter between Quintanar del Rey and Toledo would have benefitted from just once replay of a contentious goal-line incident.
In the match in Spain's Tercera Division, a Quintanar del Rey lashes a shot against the crossbar, only for it to bounce down in front of the goal and then safely be cleaned up by the opposition defence.
As both teams go about their business, the referee then inexplicably decides to award a goal - despite not a single appeal from any Quintanar players - much to the dismay of everyone. The goal proved vital, as the match ended 3-3.
