Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of the Russian republic of Chechnya, has publicly apologised for abusing a referee by shouting at him through a stadium's public announcement system, BBC News has reported.

The incident occurred during last Sunday's Russian Premier League game between Terek Grozny and Rubin Kazan.

In the 83rd minute, referee Mikhail Vilkov showed Terek Grozny's captain Rizvan Utsyev a second yellow card. Incensed by the decision, Kadyrov took to the PA system and shouted: "The referee's been bought off! You jerk!"

Kadyrov, who was Terek Grozny club president from 2004 until 2011, has publicly apologised to the fans but not to the referee who he insists deserved the verbal tirade.

Kadyrov admitted he was responsible, writing on his Instagram account: "It was a terrible game because the referee was biased.

"He did everything possible to change the outcome of the match - didn't award a [clear] penalty and gave Utsyev a second yellow.

"I apologise to the whole football world for what I said in the heat of the moment. But not to the referee, he deserved to be called corrupt."

The Russian Football Union will hold a disciplinary hearing this week and it is thought that the club will be fined 500,000 roubles ($16,300) or forced to hold matches behind closed doors.
