Neville Southall fears Chris Coleman will be sacked if Wales lose to Scotland in Friday's 2014 World Cup qualifier.

The former Wales goalkeeper told BBC Sport: "Personally I wouldn't sack him, but if we lose there will be a lot of people queuing up to put a knife in his back."

Coleman, who has only enjoyed one victory in the current qualification campaign, could become the next manager to be dismissed if he fails to earn a positive result at Hampden Park.

However, Wales' one success came against the Scots back in October, when Gareth Bale struck twice in the final 10 minutes to earn a 2-1 win in Cardiff.

Coleman, who has managed Fulham and Coventry in recent years, had been previously managing Greek side Larissa before being named successor for the late Gary Speed.

Coleman has won two out of his seven games as manager of Wales, who will go bottom of Group A if beaten on Friday.

If sacked, Coleman would become the 34th manager to lose his job this season.

But Southall believes Coleman should be given more time.

"I think they should give him [Coleman] until the end of the campaign and have a look then, or give him another year," he added. "At the end of the day we have a certain number of players to choose from, you need stability and you need people to put things in place and he hasn't had enough time.

"If you are in the job for a year you have players for five days over six games which is 30 days, it is really hard to build a successful business in 30 days or in 50 days.

"We need to give him a bit of time."
