As seen in recent years, players who have been brought to a club on a free transfer can be just as effective as the ones bought for millions.

Here I take a look at Premier League stars who may not remain at their current clubs come the new season but still have a lot to offer.

Chris Brunt | West Bromwich Albion

Chris Brunt is a player whose name I was shocked to see on the list of summer freebies. He has a brilliant left foot, is a huge danger from set-plays and is entering what should be his prime as a 28-year-old midfielder.

More importantly, he is the club captain and therefore a very important member of the squad.

Perhaps his contract will be extended, but with little time remaining until the end of the season, it would be no surprise to see him snapped up by another Premier League club.

Florent Malouda | Chelsea

Certain to leave in the summer after falling out of favour in the past year at Stamford Bridge, the Frenchman would still be a boost to most European teams.

Still only 32, his future in the English top flight looks bleak so a move abroad is probably on the cards, and potentially a return back to France in an attempt to re-discover the form he exhibited in Carlo Ancelotti's time at Chelsea.

Andrey Arshavin | Arsenal

The Russian's time at Arsenal has all but come to an end, with his extremely bright start to life in England feeling like a long time ago.

Arshavin can still produce the talent he has shown during his stint at the Emirates, although this is most likely not in the Premier League. He definitely still has a lot to offer, and a fresh start could be what the 31-year-old needs to revamp his career.

Rio Ferdinand | Manchester United

This would be a great coup for any team looking for a solid defender. Ferdinand has a huge wealth of Premier League and European experience, playing at the highest levels for his entire career and producing a consistent array of displays this season to suggest he's back to his best after being plagued by a back injury.

Although it looks possible that he could sign a contract extension at Old Trafford, he may not, and if he doesn't then expect a flurry of clubs to battle it out for his signature.

Frank Lampard | Chelsea

Frank Lampard is the complete midfielder - a 20-goal a season man, box-to-box and a brilliant passer to name a few of his traits. It really defies belief that he's not been offered a new contract with the Blues, as he is within reach of Bobby Tambling's club record for goals scored.

The Stamford Bridge faithful will be devastated to see him leave, and a host of top overseas clubs will be monitoring his situation closely. At 34-years-old and still looking as sharp as ever - he would be a huge addition to any squad in the world.

Other notable players that are soon to be out of contract include:

Kolo Toure, Brede Hangeland, Jermaine Pennant, Thomas Hitzlsperger, Carlton Cole, Maynor Figueroa and Franco di Santo.
