Which are the best counter-attacking teams in Europe? (1)

Published 3 Comments

It's one of the most exciting sights in sport - a rapid counter-attack, an opponent caught on the break, and a goal in the blink of an eye.

Some teams are better than others when it comes to the art of the fast break. Real Madrid are often mentioned as one of the best, Tottenham too, with Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon on the wingers.

But neither is the best in Europe, at least when it comes down to cold, hard statistics.

No, in actual fact, that home of counter-attacking football is the Bundesliga. It's popularity outside of Germany is beginning to rise, and Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund's success in the Champions League helps.

Germany's blistering performances in the 2010 World Cup hinted at an emerging young group of talented players - the footage of a puffing Gareth Bale hanging onto Mesut Ozil's coattails was a defining image.

Because, as magnificent and metronomic and brilliant as Barcelona's 'tiki-taka' style is, it's hard to beat the thrill and exhilaration of a counter-attack.

Looking at the top five leagues in European football, France, England, Germany, Italy and Spain, let's look at which teams have scored the most counter-attacking goals.
