Which are the best counter-attacking teams in Europe? (5)

Published 3 Comments

La Liga

Some would say Real Madrid are the best counter-attackers in Europe, but it turns out they're only the best outside the Bundesliga.

Jose Mourinho's 4-2-3-1 system is versatile. Against weaker opposition it gets the best out of Cristiano Ronaldo, but in tougher match-ups like El Clasico and the Champions League it accentuates the strengths of Ozil, Di Maria, Ronaldo and Benzema.

The difference in style between Barcelona and Real Madrid is clear when you look at counter-attacking goals versus open play.

For Barcelona 70 goals from open play, just three on the counter. Real Madrid eight on the break, and 39 from open play. Quite a difference.

Top three counter-attacking teams

Real Betis 6 goals

Espanyol 6 goals

Real Madrid 8 goals
