Rio Ferdinand’s England career has once again been put on hold after he withdrew from the England squad.
Ferdinand was chosen for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro this weekend but announced on his official Facebook page that he was pulling out due to a “pre-planned medical and training program.”
The defender did however, did state that he would like to be considered for future matches.
Ferdinand has worked his way back to consistent fitness after a run of injuries took him out of the thoughts of England manager, Roy Hodgson. The 34-year-old has been in scintillating form this season and has worked his way back in to the England set-up.
This is not the first time Ferdinand’s future England career has been shrouded with doubt. The player was previously dropped from the squad for the European Championships.
Many believed the decision was due to the then on going judicial proceedings against John Terry’s alleged racial abuse against Ferdinand’s brother, Anton.
Terry was cleared of all charges but the FA decided to conduct a separate review and banned him for 4 matches. Terry subsequently announced his retirement from International football paving the way for Ferdinand’s return.
After the announcement of Rio Ferdinand’s selection in the England squad many quarters applauded the decision to recall one of the most elegant defenders of his generation to the England squad.
“He's a top-drawer player and he's certainly not finished,
"Looking at his performances against (Real) Madrid, especially away, he was outstanding,
"Regular performances week-in and week-out, he's a top performer, has been and still is,
"I don't know the ins and outs of his future but the way he's playing at the minute he one of the top defenders in the Premier League for sure."
Rio Ferdinand has represented England 81 times scoring 3 goals. The latest news of his withdrawal is seen by many as the end for Ferdinand’s international career. However, with some quarters still saying he has an England future only time will tell what lies ahead for this exceptional centre-back.
