With all English teams out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage and the Premier League title race all but over, attention turns towards the Europa League.

Unlike the Premier League, the winner of this competition is nothing short of unpredictable. On paper, the current European Champions look to be favourites but it’s never that easy. Here we look at the remaining teams to see how they got to the last-eight.

Rubin Kazan

Rubin Kazan have done well to only lose a single match in this years Europa League. They have knocked out Atletico Madrid, which is in itself a big achievement. Rubin Kazan will head in to their next round match against Chelsea FC believing that they can progress through.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur progressed through the group stages in second place falling just behind S.S Lazio with 10 points while S.S Lazio had 12 points. Once through the group stages Tottenham Hotspur defeated Olympique Lyon 3-2 (on aggregate) and Intee Milan (4-4 on aggregate aet, on away goals).

FC Basel 1893

FC Basel progressed through the group stages in second place falling just behind Genk with nine points while Genk achieved 12 points. Once through the group stages FC Basel 1893 defeated Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk (3-1 on aggregate) and Zenit St Petersburg.

Fenerbahce SK

Fenerbahce SK progressed through the group stages and once they had done so they came up against BATE and defeated them (1-0 on aggregate) and then they defeated FC Viktoria Plzeň(2-1 on aggregate). Fenerbahce will believe that they can make the it through to the round of 4.

Lazio

Probably the most impressive performers this year. Lazio progressed through the group stages in first place with 12 points and then went on to play Boruissa Monchengladbach and defeated them 5-3 on aggregate. Then they played Stuttgart and defeated them 5-1 on aggregate.

SL Benfica

SL Benfica were knocked out of the Champions League in the group stages and subsequently were placed in the round of 32 in the Europa League. They were matched with Bayer Leverkusen and defeated them 3-1 on aggregate. Next they face Bordeaux and defeated them 4-2 on aggregate.

Newcastle United

Newcastle United progressed through the group stages and defeated FC Metalist Kharkiv in the round of 32 (1-0 on aggregate) and then they defeated mega-rich Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala (1-0 on aggregate). Newcastle United's next match is against SL Benfica.

Chelsea

Chelsea FC became the first holders to be knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage. Subsequently being placed in the round of 32 in the Europa League. They were matched up against Sparta Prague and defeated them (2-1 on aggregate). Next Chelsea defeated Steaua Bucharest (3-2 on aggregate).

Although Chelsea may be favourites for the competition they will certainly face sterner tests than they have done so far. The likes of Tottenham and Lazio are sure to provide them a tough route to the trophy.
