With the upcoming World Cup qualifier against San Marino, ranked 207th in the world, Roy Hodgson may consider his options to be limited in the goalkeeping department.
England lie in second place in their group above Poland who have a game in hand meaning that a slip up against any team could cost England their position.
There are a number of possible goalkeepers who Hodgson could turn to, but perhaps none equipped to start for a team of England’s standing in world football just yet and dislodge Joe Hart from his number one spot.
Aged 29, Foster is four years older than Hart and may not be considered as a contender for England's long-term future man between the sticks. Having kept a mere 2 clean sheets in his last 13 premier league appearances, Foster may not be thought of as suitable or in good enough current form to justify the displacement of Hart.
Heroics in the Champions League this season has brought the Celtic number one into the fold for an England call up, something that he maybe deserves. Aged 25 like Joe Hart, he has a long career still ahead of him due to the relative shelf life of goalkeepers. At 6 foot and 7inches, his stature could prove an attribute, which holds him above smaller and more acrobatic goalkeepers in the England fold.
Currently wearing the number one jersey for the England Under 21 team, many see Butland as an exciting prospect for the future. Expected to be starting for Stoke as a replacement for Asmir Begovic next season, strong performances could give him a claim for a place in the England goal. However having not played in the Premier League to date, his experience at the top level may be a hindrance to his shot at the role for a few years.
With recent England goalkeepers there has been a tendency for them to ‘lose their form’, the likes of Robert Green or Paul Robinson both doing so in recent years. Joe Hart may be neither of these however without a clear replacement, England may struggle should Hart fall out of favour.
