Michael Owen - England 2-2 Argentina (3-4 pens), 1998

England exacted revenge of sorts on Argentina 12 years later when Michael Owen, aged just 18 at the time, scored what was to be remembered as the most iconic goal of his distinguished career.

With the scores level at 1-1 after an absorbing first quarter-of-an-hour in Saint Etienne, Owen embarked on a menacing run right into the heart of the Argentina defence and finished wonderfully beyond the reach of an advancing Carlos Roa.

The encounter ended 2-2 after extra time, with Javier Zanetti scoring the leveller for Argentina, before they went on to triumph in a penalty shootout.
