Manchester United winger Nani given one-match suspension

Manchester United winger Nani has been handed a one-match ban following his red card against Real Madrid in the Champions League, according to BBC Sport.

The Portuguese international was sent off in the second leg of their last 16 tie after 56 minutes, much to the fury of manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 26-year-old could have been banned for three games if UEFA had adjudged his challenge on Alvaro Arbeloa to be violent conduct, however, they chose to stay with the automatic one-game suspension.

Ferguson has also been fined £8,500 for nonfullfillment of post-match media obligations.

A UEFA statement read: "Manchester United FC midfield player Nani has been suspended for one match by UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body, following the red card he received at the UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg against Real Madrid CF at Old Trafford on 5 March."

"Manchester United head coach Sir Alex Ferguson has been fined €10,000 for non-fulfilment of the post-match media obligations at the same match."

At the time of the sending off, United looked to be in control and were 2-1 up in the tie. Following the dismissal of Nani the Spanish side scored twice through Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo, winning 3-2 on aggregate.

A win would have seen United square up with old rival Didier Drogba and his Galatasaray side in the quarter-finals.
