Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has talked about his frustration at the lack of first-team opportunities he has got this season.

In a stuttering Gunners campaign, the England international has started just 11 games in the Premier League.

The 19-year-old scored for England on Friday in an 8-0 win over San Marino and revealed that the season hasn't gone the way he would have liked.

"Obviously it hasn't progressed, in a way, as much as I would want to because I always want to play," he said to the Daily Star.

"I always understood that sometimes Arsene (Wenger) will protect his younger players."

Oxlade-Chamberlain was hailed as future star for club and country following his £12million move from Southampton when aged just 17. The winger added to these expectations when he featured for England at Euro 2012 last May.

The Gunner has, however, admitted that he has spoken to players who have also been in his position and says there is still a long way to go this season.

"I remember speaking to Robin van Persie last year and Theo Walcott before and they said they experienced the same thing," he added.

"I can't complain with the way the season has gone - there is still a long ay to go and I could play a crucial part at some point."

The Arsenal winger is also revelling in his recent performance for England and was delighted to start considering the competition for places.

"I'm really happy to be able to get a goal. Obviously I haven't had too many goals recently," he said.

"It's really nice the England manager showed faith in me and gave me 90 minutes.

"There are a lot of quality players here, you can never expect to start."
