Top 5: Premier League transfer targets
Radamel Falcao, Edinson Cavani & Cristiano Ronaldo have all been linked with a summer move to the Premier League
With the Premier League racing towards the finish line the silly season that is the summer transfer window is on the horizon.
Here we take a look at five players who could make the move to England’s shores this summer:
Dede | Vasco Da Gama
Dede – otherwise known as Anderson Vital da Silva – is a player who has been on Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s radar for a couple of years now. The tough tackling 24-year-old has shone in central defence for Vasco da Gama recently and looks a certainty for the Brazil squad at the World Cup next year.
The Brazilian’s current employers confirmed this week that they will have to sell the player in order to ease their current financial crisis – news which has also alerted Manchester United’s arch-rivals Liverpool. It is most likely the Rio de Janeiro club would do business with the highest bidder which could swing the battle in favour of the Red Devils.
The player himself has voiced a desire to join a big club in Europe and the Premier League would pose an attractive option. However, Benfica and Juventus have also been linked with the player meaning England’s top flight could yet miss out on the promising defender.
Radamel Falcao | Atletico Madrid
Heavily linked with both Manchester City and Chelsea, Radamel Falcao looks all but certain to be leaving the Spanish capital in the summer. The Colombian has inspired an Atletico Madrid team - who sit third in La Liga - with an impressive 21 league goals already this term.
Roberto Mancini sees him as the ideal replacement for Mario Balotelli - who departed for Milan in January - and such a high profile signing is needed at the Etihad Stadium to counter Robin van Persie’s impact at champions-elect Manchester United.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich may also take out his cheque book again to replace the failing Fernando Torres, who continues to experience a terrible time in the Chelsea attack.
The 27-year-old would bring goals back to Stamford Bridge that have been sorely missed after waving goodbye to fans favourite Didier Drogba – and a potential swap deal taking Torres back to his former club may appeal to Atletico.
Edinson Cavani | Napoli
After consecutive outstanding seasons in Italy, Edinson Cavani is attracting the interest of a host of top clubs around Europe. Roberto Mancini has told of his admiration for the player in recent weeks but reports suggest Real Madrid have jumped to the front of the queue in the race for his signature.
The Uruguayan has been in imperious form for Napoli this season, leading the Serie A scoring charts with 20 goals and has been linked with a move away from Italy for some time. Napoli currently occupy second place in the league and look certain to be playing Champions League football come August, which could persuade the 26-year-old to stay put.
Rumours have surfaced that Chelsea may also bid for the player if they fail in their attempt for Radamel Falcao – but Cavani sporting the white of Madrid or continuing in the Sky Blue of Napoli seem the most likely outcomes.
Stevan Jovetic | Fiorentina
As reported by the Daily Mail recently, Stevan Jovetic has caught the eye of Arsene Wenger – and with 12 league goals under his belt so far few can question the judgement of the Arsenal boss.
The 23-year-old has helped current club Fiorentina into fourth spot in Serie A as they continue to push AC Milan and Napoli for a Champions League place.
With the Gunners proving a little goal-shy since the departure of Robin van Persie the Montenegro international would be a welcome addition to Wenger’s squad – although if Arsenal do miss out on Champions League football next term any potential deal could become stale.
If that proves the case the versatile forward could decide to carry on in Florence or look elsewhere in search of a club competing for Europe’s top honour. The player was linked with a move to Manchester City last summer and Tottenham Hotspur could prove an attractive alternative.
Cristiano Ronaldo | Real Madrid
The rumour mill went into overdrive a couple of weeks back when it was reported Manchester United were plotting a summer move for their former player – but the media frenzy seems to have settled now the drama of United’s Champions League encounter with Real Madrid has passed.
Reports circulated that United held talks with officials from sports manufacturer Nike to put together a package that would see Cristiano Ronaldo back at Old Trafford. Ronaldo himself did little to quash such rumours after talking about his old club and their supporters in such high regard after the crunch clash on March 5.
With the Portuguese currently refusing to put pen-to-paper on a new Madrid contract there appears to be a shimmer of hope for Red Devil fans; however, doubts remain if United can stump up the cash if he does become available at the end of the season.
