Liverpool have held informal talks with the agent of Xabi Alonso over a return to the club, according to reports.
The Daily Star claims the Real Madrid midfielder is wanted back at Anfield, but financial constraints could provide a major stumbling block in any possible move.
Indeed, the 31-year-old would have to take a sizable pay cut to return to Liverpool, with current earnings at £80,000 plus bonuses and a share of his image rights at the Santiago Bernabeu, the report claims.
Alonso has since been offered a more lucrative deal with Los Blancos, according to the paper, but he rejected a two-year offer and looks set to leave the Spanish capital.
Both LA Galaxy and Anzhi Makhachkala are also interested in the Spanish international, and have the financial might to trump an offer from Liverpool for the player.
However, the La Liga star has history with the Reds, having spent five successful years on Merseyside following a move from Real Sociedad in 2004.
Whether that will be enough to help Brendan Rodgers lure the player back to Liverpool remains to be seen.
But, if he does return to the Premier League, Alonso would join a plethora of Spain stars in the English top flight - including Reds stopper Pepe Reina.
