Argentina go into Tuesday’s World Cup qualifiers top of their group after Lionel Messi scored one and set up two goals for Gonzalo Higuain to secure a comfortable 3-0 victory over Venezuela.

This victory took Alejandro Sabella’s side four points clear at the top with 23 points after 10 games.

With six games remaining, Argentina are favourites to take their place at next years finals in Brazil. So can they win the tournament?

Argentina have not won a major tournament in 20 years with their last victory coming in the Copa America.

Diego Maradona was appointed head coach prior to the World Cup in 2010. Although they started brightly and looked like dark horses for the title, the team from South America was demolished 4-0 by an inspired German side that were eventually knocked out by champions Spain.

Since the appointment of Sabella, Argentina have looked a formidable force around the world. Argentina arguably boast the best attack in international football but have been let down by poor team selection by various managers. Sabella seems to have settled the side and, most importantly, he finally looks to be getting the best out of Messi.

Messi has started to show his club form for his national team with an impressive 14 goals in 12 games. Gonzalo Higuain has been also clinical in front of goal lately.

Argentina have every chance of winning the World Cup in Brazil if they can continue to find the right balance between attack and defence. With Messi showing his best form on the international stage, Argentina will be amongst the favourites for their 3rd world cup title.
