It's been a long time since the Scottish national team achieved very much; a win over the likes of the Faroe Islands and Macedonia seem to be classed as success nowadays.
Having just appointed Gordon Strachan as manager, there is a little bit of hope but the lack of top quality players for him to choose from is worrying.
Having qualified for eight major tournaments, Scotland have never made it past the first round and this year it looks like they won't come close to qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil as they sit rock bottom of their group with just two points from five games.
When you look at the quality many other nations have at their disposal and managers that have too many to choose from, Scotland are the complete opposite.
Not that their players are bad but can we compare the squads of say Brazil, Spain, Italy or the Netherlands? At present, Scotland do not seem to have a natural goal scorer like Wayne Rooney of England or David Villa of Spain. They do not have a player that can dribble around defenders, attack the wings with blistering pace or a defender that can stand toe to toe with the best attackers.
The national squad sums up just how poor football is in Scotland at the moment. Apart from Celtic's recent success in the Champions League and Rangers making the final of the Europa League in 2008, there have been no real exciting, stand out moments or matches in Scottish football, both domestic and international. A lack of Scottish players being signed for big named clubs also signifies a lack of recognisable talent.
Having never got past the first round of an international tournament, Scotland have obviously never quite had the class required to challenge on the national front but with the quality of football rising all over the world you have to fear that Scotland will only drop further behind until they are considered minnows of the game. You can only wonder if the Scots will ever see their national side competing in the World Cup or Euro Championship again.
