Hailed by Rio Ferdinand earlier this month no less. The Manchester United defender feels his teammate doesn't get the recognition he deserves, and there's a feeling among some that Carrick is under-appreciated by his countrymen.

Few could have played that pass for Javier Hernandez against Chelsea in early March, and his vision is almost unique among English players. In Ferdinand's mind, it's because Carrick doesn't do the "explosive" things on the pitch.

Whatever the reason, 26 caps for England is a criminally low tally for a player of his ability.
