With five out of the eight teams left in this seasons Champions League coming from Spain and Germany, many are predicting the trophy will head to one of these countries.
However, the club which seems to have slipped under the radar is Juventus, who to ignore as potential winners would be quite absurd. They are the current Italian Champions and look likely to be crowned the winners of Serie A once again this year. If they’re the best in their own country, why can’t they become the best team in Europe? Here are some reasons why Juventus can win the trophy this season:
A strong defence can easily win you games, as if the other team doesn’t score they can’t win the game. And Juventus’ defensive record is the best in the whole competition, as they have managed to keep five clean sheets out of their eight performances this season - including a 3-0 win over reigning Champions Chelsea.
Juventus’ defence comprises of players at the peak of their career, probably playing their best football to date, in terms of Chiellini and Bonucci. Coupled with the fact that they are backed up by one of the best goal keepers in the decade behind them, in the experience figure of Gianluigi Buffon, teams are going to find it very difficult to break Juventus down. If they are able to continue these solid performances at the back, they have a considerable chance of winning games due to the attacking talent at their disposal.
Controlling games and setting a pace that you want to play at is a key part of winning games within the European competition. Teams in Italy have a reputation for playing a slower game and to have any success, Juventus need to ensure they play at a pace which they feel comfortable with.
Juventus have a player which has been doing this for his whole career in the form of Andrea Pirlo. Pirlo is key to everything good that happens at Juventus, due to the fact he is the link between the defence and attack. His passing range is one of the best in the world and if the italian giants can get him on the ball, with enough time and space, he can play the eye of the needle pass which could be the difference between success and defeat. By having a player of Pirlo’s quality his influence on a game could be the significant factor behind the Italian giants having any chance of success in this competition.
Juventus have to play Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals, who are the run-away leaders of the Bundesliga and is hence the tie of the round. If they are able to progress to the next round, this will create a confidence within the changing room.
This confidence increases a player’s self-belief in their ability to ensure cup success and therefore increase the level of performance. If Juventus are able to beat Bayern, the self-confidence gained by this result will probably make them the unwanted opponents for the semi-finals.
Juventus certainly have the quality and capability to win the Champions League and don’t be surprised if they shock a few teams and do it this season.
