Arsenal & Manchester United competition grows for ‘new Michael Ballack’

Published 11 Comments

Arsenal and Manchester United face major competition from Europe’s biggest sides if they are to land a young German star labelled ‘the next Michael Ballack’.

According to Calcimercato, Juventus are taking a serious interest in the 18-year-old Leon Goretzka, which could alert Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Arsenal manager and his Manchester United counterpart were both reportedly watching the VFL Bochum midfielder, along with Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

With such prestigious names reportedly interested in him, both the Emirates Stadium and Old Trafford outfits will have to work hard to land him.

Arsenal have been criticised for lacking a more physical presence in the centre of midfield and the 6ft 2in Goretzka would be able to provide some of that.

The Gunners have a tradition for developing young stars and the Germany Under-19 star could see a move their as a good opportunity to progress his career.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are reportedly set to have a summer clear out in midfield and signing Goretzka would be with the long-term view that he will eventually succeed the likes of Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes.

Ferguson has been criticised for lacking something in midfield but this has not stopped his team from cruising to a 15-point lead in the Premier League.

Goretzka’s stature and ability to defend as well as he drives forward is behind the comparisons with former Germany captain Ballack.

He is currently a key man in Bochum’s midfield and will have to be at his best if they are to get out of the Bundesliga 2 relegation scrap they are currently involved in.
