Liverpool have reportedly missed out on Lazio defender Modibo Diakite.

The Sun claims the 26-year-old centre back has signed a pre-contract agreement with Norwich City, and will join the Norfolk-based club in the summer.

Previous reports in March suggested the Frenchman would spurn advances from Liverpool to sign for Napoli, but now the Canaries appear to have come from the dark to land the player.

Diakite began his professional career with Pescara, making one appearance in Serie ‘B’ before joining Lazio in the Italian top flight.

Seven years later, his time at the Stadio Olimpico seems to be up, but it’s Canaries boss Chris Hughton who has beaten Reds chief Brendan Rodgers to the signature.

Liverpool are reported to be in the market for a defender this summer, with veteran centre back Jamie Carragher set to retire at the end of the season.

And, with doubts over Sebastian Coates at Anfield, that leaves the Northern Irish manager short of options once the current campaign concludes.

Diakite would have added some serious strength in a potentially troublesome position for Liverpool, but their loss is Norwich's gain, with Hughton securing a major transfer coup at Carrow Road.
