Liverpool: The future looks bright
Despite another stuttering season, Liverpool have made significant progress towards a successful future
With yet another Premier League season almost over, Liverpool fans may not have much to cheer this term. Many however, will be looking forward to next season following their first under the management of Brendan Rodgers.
This season, so far, Liverpool have failed to meet expectations. Currently sitting seventh in the Premier League, they have fallen behind local rivals Everton, who are three points ahead with a game in hand over the Reds.
They exited the F.A. Cup to League One strugglers Oldham Athletic and have also been eliminated from the Europa League by Russian outfit Zenit St Petersburg. But in spite of all of this, the season has offered their loyal supporters hope for the future.
Having appointed Brendan Rodgers as manager in the summer, their start to the campaign meant that he, just as others before him, was the subject of speculation regarding his future at Anfield.
But the owners have placed their faith in Rodgers and are adamant that he is the man to restore the glory days at Anfield. The documentary 'Being Liverpool F.C’ shed a great light on the club. During the series, it became clear that the new owners fully backed and believed in what Rodgers has planned.
The signs so far have been promising. With sensation Raheem Sterling breaking his way into the first team, his pace down the flank has been a worry to all defenders that have come up against him.
He, along with the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Carl Robinson and Jordan Henderson have all featured for the England U-21's as of late and have put them in a good position to reach the U-21's European Championship in the summer.
With such good English potential in the depths of their squad, and the experience they have gained this season with Liverpool, Sterling especially, there is a lot to be excited about. With Steven Gerrard continuing as captain, the wisdom he can pass on down to these impressionable young players is vital.
Another key factor for Liverpool in their bid to re-join the Premier League's elite is Luis Suarez. Top scorer currently in the Premier League with 22 goals, Suarez has been pivotal to Rodgers and Liverpool this season.
But they could face a fight to hang on to their star man as rumours of interest from the likes of Juventus continue to circulate. With Juventus able to offer the striker Champions League football, which Liverpool cannot currently, it may be a tough task to keep him.
However, his love for the club is undoubted and he still plays with a smile on his face despite them not challenging for any trophies this season. Should he remain at Anfield, he will be a huge headache for defences yet again next season.
The arrival of Daniel Sturridge has also been a plus point. Having arrived from Chelsea, Sturridge has settled in well and is already finding the net since his transfer from Stamford Bridge in January.
Surprise buy Philippe Coutinho has also received praise, and following a poor spell with Inter Milan, could well live up to the hype that surrounded him as youngster moving from Brazil to Europe.
All in all, the future is bright on the red half of Merseyside. Even though they have had to endure another tough season and take stick from the Evertonians above them in the league, the progress this season has been good. With the break through of players such as Sterling, additions like Sturridge and having the inform Suarez leading the frontline; it has been far from doom and gloom. And with Rodgers continuing his reign next season, there is quite a lot more to come from Liverpool Football Club in the future.
