Top five: Next international record breakers (4)

Published 3 Comments

Wayne Rooney - international goals: 35

While Wayne Rooney may have more international goals than Robin van Persie and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, the Manchester United striker must score significantly more if he is to be England's record goalscorer.

Rooney needs 15 more goals to eclipse Bobby Charlton's record, which has stood since 1970, although it is a tally well within the reach of England's No.10.

The 27-year-old needs five more to reach England's exclusive 40 club which, along with Charlton, includes Michael Owen, Jimmy Greaves and Gary Lineker, and Rooney has time on his side to reach the top.

Rooney's chances, however, may be affected should England fail to reach the World Cup next year although, provided he stays fit, the Old Trafford star has several seasons of international football ahead of him.
