Manchester City have been handed potential encouragement in their pursuit of Napoli star Edinson Cavani.

The 26-year-old has been in scintillating Serie ‘A’ form once again this season, scoring 20 goals in 26 games following a total of 23 and 26 in 35 games the two campaigns before.

His form has understandably led to speculation over a move away from the Stadio Sao Paolo, with the Citizens amongst the clubs pursuing the player.

And, club president Aurelio De Laurentiis has given a potential green light to Cavani’s exit, admitting he’d like to keep the player at the club forever, but would let him leave if an interesting offer cam his way.

"If it was up to me, then he would stay here for the rest of his career. But if he receives an intriguing offer from a decorated club then he will be free to decide,” he told Radio Marte, according to The Daily Express.

“If he does leave, Napoli will continue to move forward – just as we did after Ezequiel Lavezzi went to Paris Saint-Germain. The club will continue its climb and we’ll choose the best possible players to replace him."

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini isn’t short of options in attack, with Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko all vying for chances.

However, Mario Balotelli’s exit from the Etihad Stadium in January has opened a potential space for a summer addition, with Cavani a potential replacement for the Italian maverick.

Radamel Falcao has also been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City in recent months, and Mancini has three months to make a decision before the transfer window re-opens in July.
