Arsenal are ‘pressing ahead’ with their interest in Swansea City defender Ashley William, according to reports.

The Daily Mail claims both Arsene Wenger and chief scout Steve Rowley have been alerted by the 28-year-old’s impressive performances this season, helping the Swans consolidate their place in the Premier League.

And, their interest in is set to peak in the summer, with the paper claiming the Gunners will launch a bid to bring the Wales skipper to the Emirates Stadium.

However, the report goes on to state that Liverpool will provide stiff competition for the player, with manager Brendan Rodgers eager to be re-united with his old colleague.

The Northern Irishman worked with Williams during his time at the Liberty Stadium, and has been linked with the former Stockport County starlet on several occasions since moving to Anfield.

Rodgers is set to have a shortage of options at centre back next season, with Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher set to retire and the jury still out on the ability of Sebastian Coates in the Premier League.

Arsenal aren’t flush in the position either though, with Per Mertesaker, Thomas Vermaelen and Laurent Koscielny the only real options for Wenger.

Williams would add some much-needed depth to the side in north London, but also on Merseyside - which explains why both clubs are eager to add his services ahead of the 2013-14 campaign.
