Drogba: Champions League win the peak of my career

Didier Drogba says winning the Champions League with Chelsea was the greatest moment of his illustrious career.

Drogba spent eight hugely successful years in west London, a spell which culminated in the Ivorian scoring the winning penalty in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich last season, before he left to head to China.

The 35-year-old returned to Europe after his ill-fated spell in the far east was cut short to join Turkish outfit Galatasaray in January, and now he has the opportunity to reprise his Champions League heroics with his new side when they take on Real Madrid in the quarter-finals next month.

Speaking to UEFA Magazine, Drogba admitted he didn't think he would have the chance to play Champions League football again after he left Chelsea, and said helping the Blues to their first European crown last season was the peak of his career.

"I didn't expect to be back in the Champions League. But I have a special relationship with the competition, I have played in the tournament back-to-back for nine seasons with Marseille and Chelsea.

"Last season I finally lifted the Champions League trophy, my last season with Chelsea was the peak of my career."

Drogba joined Galatasaray after his spell with Chinese outfit Shanghai Shenhua came to an end over a dispute about wages, and signed alongside Dutch playmaker Wesley Sneijder to bolster the Istanbul-based outfit's hopes of progressing to the latter stages of Europe's top club competition.

"I'm here to play football at the highest level again, the club are well established in Europe, they have won the Uefa Cup in the past and are trying to take it to the next level," he continued.

"Our transfers got an amazing reception. We are trying to live up to what is expected from us.

"Wesley hadn't played football for six months and had to build up his match fitness.  I hadn't played for a few months either, I wouldn't be telling the truth if I said I'm 100 per-cent however, I'm best to give everything for the team."
