Manchester United are considering a move for Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to recruit reinforcements.

According to the Daily Express, media outlets in Belgium have claimed Sir Alex Ferguson’s scouts have been impressed with the Ajax star and could make a summer bid.

Manchester United’s current backline is performing well but there are issues over a long-term replacement for 34-year-old Rio Ferdinand and the injury troubled Nemanja Vidic.

Alderweireld has taken on greater responsibility at Ajax since the departure of Jan Vertonghen to Tottenham Hotspur last summer.

However, the Belgium international’s contract in Amsterdam expires in the summer of 2014 and he is yet to sign a new contract.

Ajax would be in danger of losing him for free at the end of next season, so a bid from Manchester United could be difficult to turn down.

Alderweireld already has experience of Old Trafford, having played and scored there when the Dutch club were eliminated by Ferguson’s side in last season’s Europa League.

The 24-year-old would also bring versatility to Manchester United, as he is more than capable of playing in central midfield as well as across the back line.
