Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has revealed Rafa Benitez enjoys the support of the entire team and that the players were not dwelling too much over the Spaniard’s future.

The former Liverpool boss took over the Stamford Bridge hot-seat, following the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo in November.

His appointment by owner Roman Abramovich was met by an acerbic response from the Chelsea faithful, who were critical of the owner’s decision of firing Di Matteo. The Italian had steered Chelsea to an FA Cup and their maiden Champions League triumph last season.

Benitez has had strained relations with the Blues fans from the first day. Earlier, the 52-year-old had accused them of not standing behind him and the team and also disparaged the club for naming him the ‘interim manager’.

Benitez has already announced he will leave Chelsea at the end of the season.

Though the future of the Stamford Bridge throne is punctuated by speculations and rumours, Azpilicueta has said that irrespective of what became of Benitez, the entire squad will continue to support him.

The defender admitted that the fans have not developed a liking for Benitez ever since he took over, but insisted that for as long as he was in charge, he will have the players’ backing.

He told The Independent:The supporters have these feelings because they have clashed many times before but Rafa, right from the start, came in with so much enthusiasm and desire to get results and so we concentrate on that.

“Of course, it's easier when everyone is pulling in the same direction, but the world is not like that. There are so many different opinions. There are always people happier with the situation than others and it comes down to respecting everyone's position.

“We still don't know what decision will be made by the club (in the summer). "Right now we are with Rafa and we are concentrating on the here and now

Chelsea currently occupy the third slot in the table and are effectively involved in top-four race with Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Everton.”
