Olivier Giroud has urged Arsenal to halt the culture of letting their best players go and start spending in the transfer market this summer.

The Gunners have fallen backwards from regular title challengers in recent years and are trophy-less in the last eight seasons, with the likes of Robin van Persie, Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri all leaving the club.

Now Arsene Wenger’s side find themselves in a battle for Champions League qualification with rivals Tottenham, with four points separating the two north London clubs ahead of this weekend's fixtures.

Giroud, a summer arrival shortly before the departure of Van Persie last summer, says Arsenal can get back to the top, but they must change the way they approach buying and selling players.

"First you need to keep your best players, that's so important. After that, maybe you need more money,” the French forward told Sky Sports.

"But Manchester United every year buy one or two players. They manage to keep their best players, I think that's the main thing to do."

Giroud has settled in well after a slow start to life at Arsenal following his move from Montpellier, and has nine Premier League goals to his name in 28 appearances.

The 26-year-old was close to joining German giants Bayern Munich before joining the Gunners last summer, but he says he is happy to be the latest in a long line of Frenchman plying their trade in north London.

"Munich were not ready to take a decision. I was really happy to sign for Arsenal,” he explained.

"Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Robert Pires, Sylvain Wiltord, Emmanuel Petit - there have been a lot of French players, so that's why I supported this team."
