There have been some stunning goals scored in the Premier League this campaign, and with May fast approaching it is time to sample this season’s best goals to date.
Here are my ten contenders for the Premier League Goal of the Season so far – and this is in no particular order:
Cameron Jerome v Southampton
In the dying minutes of the game, it looked as though Stoke’s unbeaten home record was coming to an abrupt end at the hands of Premier League new boys Southampton. However, after the ball broke to him 30 yards out, Jerome thumped the ball into the top corner.
Luis Suarez v Newcastle United
At 1-0 down at home to Newcastle, Liverpool needed some inspiration - and it was provided by their Uruguayan maestro. He controlled a long ball forward miraculously before rounding Tm Krul to slot home.
Papiss Cissé v Southampton
A long punt forward from Tim Krul bounced straight through to Cissé who has scored some beauties since he arrived in the Premier League. He lashed a volley which looped over the keeper high into the net.
Rafael v QPR
QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar could only palm the ball as far as the swashbuckling Brazilian full back who sprinted onto the bouncing ball first and used his momentum to slam the ball into the roof of the net from the edge of the penalty area.
Zoltan Gera v Liverpool
The opening goal of West Brom’s Premier League campaign; this sumptuous volley was some way to announce West Brom’s start to the season. This unstoppable shot arrowed right into the top corner.
Demba Ba v Reading
As Demba Ba slipped in between two Reading defenders to meet a flat and powerful ball forward, it seemed he would have to take a touch and set himself before shooting. However, the Senegalese marksman watched the ball over his shoulder and lashed it powerfully into the net.
Leighton Baines v Newcastle United
This free-kick from easily 30 yards swerved past the wall and Tim Krul into the corner of the goal, despite starting on the other side of the goal. This bullet of a shot was into the goal in the blink of an eye.
Eden Hazard v Stoke City
Hazard collected the ball 40 yards out and after a nice bit of skill found himself in plenty of space. On his weaker foot he had a go and the result was a scintillating strike into the top corner of Asmir Begovic’s goal.
Gareth Bale v Norwich City
A brilliant solo effort: Bale received the ball on the halfway line and went on a weaving run, beating three defenders and entering the Canaries’ penalty area to manipulate the ball onto his left foot and powerfully slap the ball home.
Gareth Bale v West Ham United
In the dying embers of the game the Welshman “bailed out” Spurs again with a glorious thumping drive into Jussi Jääskeläinen top corner. This goal won a match which Spurs had previously trailed in, and promises to be vital in their pursuit of a top-four finish.
