Liverpool psychiatrist claims players can't handle the pressure of top-four
Liverpool news: DR. Steve Peters thinks Liverpool should not obsess over high targets
Liverpool team psychiatrist Steve Peters believes the Reds obsession of finishing inside the top-four is affecting their performance.
Peters advised the Merseyside club not to take excessive pressure of achieving their goals, as a team’s position in the league also depends on how other sides are performing.
Liverpool hired DR. Peters in October last year who was tasked to carry out one session a week with the team in order to strengthen their mentality.
After finishing eighth in the table last term, Liverpool have made very little progress in their march towards the Champions League places this term, as they currently hold the seventh place in the table and are effectively out of the top-four race.
Though DR. Peters has made the observation that the team buckles under pressure of meeting the fans’ expectations - it doesn’t require any psychiatric expertise to conclude that the Reds have almost always collapsed this season when they were being considered as serious top-four contenders.
And the Liverpool team psychiatric advised Liverpool not to over-burden themselves with pre-set targets, as they cannot totally influence their position in the league.
He told the Independent: “A goal is something you must be able to control and you can't control [your place] in the league. It depends on how others play, not just you. You always like to influence things and influence as much as you can but accept that most things in life are a dream. They're not guaranteed to happen.”
The doctor also highlighted that his role was to work with the psychological state of the team, and that manager, Brendan Rodgers, was the one who devises and formulates all the strategies.
He added: “From my perspective in sport I am not sure that's the psych's job. It is indirectly but I think the manager is the key person.”
