Joey Barton has taken to Twitter after Paris Saint Germain defender Thiago Silva criticised the Marseille midfielder for his comments about the Brazil national team.

The two footballers are plying their trade in Ligue 1 after they both left their old clubs in the summer. Silva arrived from Italian side AC Milan, while Barton is currently on-loan from English side Queens Park Rangers.

Over recent weeks, Barton has taken it upon himself to slam the Brazil national team and claim they are nowhere near as good as where they should be.

Barton had previously commented that rising star Neymar only looked good on YouTube.

After hearing of Barton's comments about Brazil, Silva issued a response to the Englishman during an interview with L'Equipe.

The defender even threw a few punches of his own, saying he could not remember Barton's name.

"I can hear a lot of people criticising the Selecao [Brazilian squad]," he told L'Equipe. "There is even a Marseille player, I can not remember his name, an Englishman, who has said bad things about Neymar, and Brazilian football, but also about Beckham and Ibra [Zlatan Ibrahimovic]. As no one is talking about him, it seems fun to him to criticise great players for people to know he exists.

"That person must never forget on Auriverde [gold and green] shirt there is more stars than on any other shirt. Five World Cups. That deserves some respect.

"But it gives me much more desire to win to silence that Englishman. What does he know about Brazilian football? I don't remember having played against him in the national team."

After being made aware of Silva's comments, Barton then did what we does best and took to Twitter to issue a response to the Brazilian centre-back.

"Thiago Silva," he started. "That the same p**** thats been injured all season. Another over rated Brazilian. Sort your hamstrings out FatBoy..."
