Wigan's Callum McManaman can't let controversy hinder progression

When any football fan hears the name Callum McManaman, they immediately think of the horrendous lunge on Newcastle’s Massadio Haidara.

Yet there is more to this promising young talent and was that tackle all that bad?

Dave Whelan’s claim that the tackle was fair did seem a little far-fetched but should there have been the public outrage the young player has received?

At the tender age of 21 and making his first league start for Wigan, is this helping a potentially superb player’s development?

Yes the tackle was rash and miss-timed yet there was nothing malicious in the tackle and had Haidara’s leg not been planted, the injury would have been far less severe. Steven Pienaar’s tackle on Javi Garcia had far more intent but received next to no publicity and had Garcia’s leg been planted, he could have suffered a serious injury like Haidara.

A possible reason for McManaman lunging in was his over-eagerness to impress on his full-debut. I personally was baffled to hear he was making his first league start as whenever I have seen him play for Wigan he has strutted about the pitch looking far older than 21 and chipping in with three cup goals this season, including a stunner in the hammering of Everton.

His outstanding performance against Newcastle was of course over-shadowed by the tackle and it could take years for the youngster to shake this monkey off his back.

McManaman could be a great player in the future and football fans should let him get on with his career now, as he also must move on from the incident.

One miss-timed tackle shouldn’t hinder any players career- especially an England U-20 international with a potentially glittering career. Whether or not his development slows we shall see.
