Arsene Wenger needs to up the ante in the transfer market this summer. His mid-season and summer signings have ranged from good to bad but nothing extraordinary, nothing that will push his team forward.

Last summer, Wenger sold his biggest asset Robin van Persie to Manchester United. Granted, it wasn't his fault because he wanted to leave, but you might have thought he would replace him with another world-class signing.

Who did he replace him with? Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski. Having pushed Podolski out to the left wing, the French boss has played Giroud more often as a central striker.

Whilst the France international front-man is good, he is not in the same league as 'RVP'. He is inconsistent - one day he'll look like a world-beater, the next, simply awful.

With the news that Wenger has been handed significant transfer budget for the summer, perhaps Arsenal fans can expect better signings in the close season?

With that in mind, here are five signings that will push Wenger's side forward ahead of next season.

Isco | Malaga

Malaga's new wonderkid. He is the secret behind the Spanish club's success. Being only 20, he has the potential to do better things, but looking at Malaga's financial crisis, it looks like he will have to go.

Isco is a precocious talent and will fit perfectly with the Gunners. However, Arsenal face stiff competition with more financially backed clubs vying for his signature, like Chelsea.

Thibaut Courtois | Chelsea (on loan at Atletico Madrid)

The Chelsea replacement for a greying Petr Cech, currently on loan to Atletico Madrid. He has been in brilliant form and acts as a human wall, protecting the goal of the lesser-known Madrid side.

If Arsenal could tempt the Stamford Bridge club to part ways with their back-up 'keeper, he would be an efficient replacement for the hopelessly out-of-form Wojciech Szczesny.

Robert Lewandowski | Borussia Dortmund

The Borussia Dortmund star is on many club's transfer wish-list, including Manchester United, but the Polish international's technical ability will see him go far at a club like Arsenal, and can also replace Giroud who has not been in good form. With Walcott playing either alongside him or out wide supplying crosses, Lewandowski will go far with Arsenal.

Holgar Badstuber | Bayern Munich

The heart of the Bavarians defence, the German international has been doing an amazing job with Bayern's defence. Letting in a meagre 11 goals in 26 rounds, he will be a good replacement for the out-of-sorts Per Mertesacker.

Vincent Kompany | Manchester City

Yet another centre-back who features in this list, Kompany would prove to be a good replacement for Thomas Vermaelen. The Belgian defender has been a shadow of the player he was last season, probably pressurised by the burden of the captain's armband. Kompany is natural leader and would be one of the best captains the Gunners have ever had, if he arrives at the Emirates.

Should Wenger spend big and attract some of the biggest players in world football, Arsenal will have a great chance of challenging at the top of the Premier League table next season.
