At a time when Manchester City were battling to get on a level footing with their cross-rivals, Manchester United delivered the ultimate reminder that they were still the main force in the Premier League.

Wayne Rooney put United ahead early on only for Gareth Barry to equalise. Darren Fletcher then re-established his side's advantage before Craig Bellamy, a nuisance throughout, put City back on level terms.

The pair exchanged goals again, with Bellamy putting his side on the verge of a memorable draw at Old Trafford with only extra-time to come.

Michael Owen, a second-half sub, came to the fore after a remarkable six minutes of added time, slotting home and earning himself a place in Red hearts for years to come. The noisy neighbours had been kept at bay for the time being….
