Football’s most eccentric managers
GMF picks out some of the more eccentric managers that have graced the game
We couldn’t have done this list without Paolo. For a man that has only ever managed one team in England the new Sunderland boss has amassed a reputation as something of a combustible character, though this will not be a surprise to anybody that watched him play.
At Swindon Town the former Lazio man got into a scuffle with striker Leon Clarke after a League Cup defeat – Clarke had joined only 11 days earlier and was sent out on loan to Chesterfield after Di Canio vowed he would never play for the club again.
He also branded ‘keeper Wes Foderingham the worst professional he had ever seen having substituted him after only 21 minutes in one game.
When he finally resigned from the Swindon post Di Canio was reportedly caught on CCTV making a midnight raid on his former offices to tear down mementos of his time in charge – the locks were changed shorty after.
