Last season, Manchester United were handed one of the biggest disappointments in their gloried history. They lost the Premier League title to their 'noisy-neighbours', Manchester City in the most agonising of circumstances courtesy a 94th minute winner from Sergio Aguero in the final match of the season against Queen's Park Rangers.
Sir Alex Ferguson, has been a man obsessed with his mission of reclaiming the Premier League throne ever since. He would have hoped for a treble this season but disappointing results has left them chasing just the Premier League crown.
Nevertheless, the intent to capture the title didn't regress and Manchester United continue their crusade towards their 20th league victory.
With the title now almost in the kitty, Sir Alex has put forth another challenge in front of his team - eclipsing Chelsea's record points tally of 95 points.
With nine games to go, and matches with matches against Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal yet to be played the ambition looks lofty, but if Manchester United ever had a chance to set this record it is this time.
Manchester United haven't been the best team in the world this season but they've come out of situations other teams haven't. They've won ugly, won comprehensively and even controversially but the point is they have won.
The fact that they have dropped only two points this season at home is an example of how dominant the Red Devils have proved to be this season.
To beat Chelsea's amazing record Manchester United need another 22 points in the 27 available. Tough as it seems, they haven't dropped a point in their last six games and are unbeaten since late September. Statistics never lie and the kind of staggering stats Manchester United have racked up point to a truly amazing end to the season.
If the Red Devils manage to win all their remaining games they'll break the 100 points barrier – something unlikely to be achieved again. They have every reason to go all out and eventually achieve what no one ever has. With no other European or cup ties to be played there is no reason why they can’t.
Lets have a look at Why Manchester United will at least break the 95 points set by Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea.
3. Their strikers
When Sir Alex shelled out a whooping £24 million for the Dutch striker Robin van Persie, eyebrows were raised but the move has proved successful. While Wayne Rooney has been happy to allow Van Persie to hog the limelight with his goals while himself working hard on the pitch in both attack and defence, RVP has been scintillating in finishing off even the half chances his team create for him.
Amassing a mammoth 52 goals and assists between them, RVP and Rooney have been the best strike force in the league. Add to that the goal-poaching skills of Danny Welbeck and Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez and you have one of the most formidable strike forces in Europe.
2. Their Defence
Manchester United were terribly shaky at the start of the season in defence. However, they managed to score a goal more than their free scoring oppositions. Sir Alex was himself quite worried about the his defence and even went to the extent of saying that he himself would have to go onto the pitch and defend, if his team defended the way they were.
But now Manchester United haven't conceded in the last six Premier League games. The transformation has been scintillating. People like Phil Jones, Rafael among others have stepped up and shown why Manchester United are still the team to beat in the Premier League.
Another example of United's tenacity in defence was their recently concluded game against Sunderland. The Red Devils were lack-lustre for most of the game but when an opportunity came by they grabbed it by both hands snatching a barely-deserved three points.
Every Premier League Champion has been based on a solid defence at the back and while United looked like overlooking that little bit of fact early on, as the season progressed, their defence has indeed stepped up.
1. Sir Alex Ferguson
Sir Alex was all but humiliated when he lost out on the title last season to United's closest and fiercest rivals Manchester City. Not only the loss, but also the way in which United lost out was heart breaking.
Although this United team arguably isn't the best team in their history, they have shown why a team is greater than the sum of its parts. Sir Alex has played a huge role in it. The transformation of a team that was heart broken, into a team of winners has been phenomenal.
Sir Alex was so purposeful with his dealings in the transfer market and even went to the extent of spending £24 million for the services of former Arsenal hitman, Robin van Persie.
Without doubt, Van Persie has been influential in United's crusade. With the recent loss to Chelsea in the FA Cup not withstanding, United have been staggering this season. Sir Alex has to take all the credit.
