Liverpool are being linked with a shock move for Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez.
The Daily Star claims Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has set his sights on the talented 23-year-old, and added the player to his list of forwards to keep tabs on in the closing weeks of the season.
Rodriguez has impressed in the English top flight this season, enjoying a particularly strong run at the St. Mary’s Stadium following Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival.
The former England U21 international has netted five times for the Saints in the Premier League, including a fine solo effort against Liverpool less than a fortnight ago.
It’s form that’s alerted the Anfield outfit, but the paper reports that Rodgers may struggle to bring the player to Merseyside if he pursues Rodriguez’s signature in the summer.
Southampton only brought the player to the club last summer, with former manager Nigel Adkins spending £7million on the Burnley hotshot.
And, with Rodriguez still in the first 12 months of a four-year contract, Liverpool would need to spend good money to pair the player with Luis Suarez in attack.
