A glorious defeat in the Champions League to Bayern Munich followed embaressment against Blackburn in the FA Cup and Bradford in the Capital One Cup. These results have left Arsenal with nothing but Champions League qualification to fight for.

Eight seasons have past since Arsenal won a major trophy. For a club of Arsenal’s stature such results are unacceptable and to lift the club from increasing mediocrity some marquee signings are needed this summer.

Reports suggest they have the money, it’s just a case of spending it. With new sponsorship deals and expensive contracts running out in the summer Wenger can afford to finally splash some cash.

We look at some of the signings that will help Arsenal end their trophy drought in the 2013-14 season.

Karim Benzema

When in form, Benzema is one of the finest strikers in world football. He took his time to establish himself at Real Madrid but was prolific in the 2011-12 season, scoring 32 goals in all competitions.

This season, however, he has struggled to replicate that fine form and has found his place in the team usurped by Argentinian Gonzalo Higuain. A move to Arsenal might be seen as a step backward for the French international, but the lure of working with Arsene Wenger and a number of national teammates in the squad might make this move a possibility. This move will also be seen as a real show of intent by Arsenal and would help to fill the hole left by Robin Van Persie.

Asmir Begovic

Arsenal’s problems start at the back and although they now have a settled pairing in Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertersacker, the goalkeeper’s position is still uncertain. Polish duo Wojciech Szczesny and Lukas Fabianski are both failing to convince as the number one option. Asmir Begovic has been a consistent performer in the premier league for the last three to four years and would bring with him leadership and confidence to the club.

Mario Gotze

Arsenal have a very good core of central midfield players but the performance of the wide players has not been that convincing. A number of players have failed to cement their position and if Gotze does sign for Arsenal the link up play between Jack Wilshere, Santi Carzola and him would be something to behold.

Arsenal have fallen considerably behind their former title rivals, Manchester United but Arsene Wenger has the cash in hand to turn the club in to contenders for the Premier League once again.
