Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas has praised the contribution of Emmanuel Adebayor, even though the Togolese striker has managed just four goals in all competitions this season, reports The Sun.
The 29-year-old has come into criticism following a number of lacklustre performances this year, but the Portuguese tactician is keen to focus on other elements of Adebayor's game, that have helped benefit the entire team.
"Adebayor has been helping the team a lot," said the Spurs boss. "As a striker, he wants to live off his goal-scoring tag and he has adapted to doing something different.
"We keep our faith and confidence in him because he is helping the team. We try to get him into the goal-scoring positions more often to help him with his scoring tag but we cannot be obsessed with this. He is doing a good job."
After an impressive 2011/12 campaign on loan at White Hart Lane, where he plundered 17 Premier League goals in 32 appearances for Tottenham, the former Manchester City striker completed a permanent £5million move last summer.
However, Adebayor's detractors suggest that since he penned that contract, his level of performance has dropped significantly, adding that he needs to put in more effort. That stance is something that Villas-Boas totally disagrees with, though, highlighting some of his unappreciated strengths.
"He has been making that link for us very, very well," he added. "We have found comfort in a 4-4-2 line up and played that most of the season.
"We always had one striker coming short off the other one and Ade has done that to a great extent this season.
"He has probably played this role with the sacrifice of more goals — that's the reality. Definitely I appreciate that and he realises this."
Villas-Boas was speaking ahead of Tottenham's Europa League quarter-final first leg clash with FC Basel this evening, where Adebayor is expected to feature as the north London side look to progress to the last four.
