Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has stated the importance for the Red Devils to get the job done in the Premier League title race.

The United goalkeeper has been putting in a string of excellent performances over the course of the season - this has led to him keeping six clean sheets for United in the last six games in the Premier League. Ahead of another highly anticipated Manchester derby, De Gea hopes the United squad can focus and finish the job.

The Spaniard told Inside United magazine: “I’d love to win the league this season but so does everyone else in the team.

“We’re all focused on getting three points from every game – that is what will take us to our objective. We appreciate where we are in the league and we want to finish it.”

De Gea initially came in for a lot of stick from all corners when he moved to the Manchester club from Athletico Madrid two years ago. He was criticised for his ability to handle the physical aspects of the Premier league as he initially struggled to cope with aerial crosses coming into the box.

Critics questioned the plausibility behind signing a goalkeeper that was far from the finished article.

De Gea’s shot-stopping capability was never in question as he had displayed in his years as an Atletico Madrid player, however Sir Alex Ferguson stood by his young goalkeeper and he has now started to repay the faith in him after some disciplined performances of late.

Now at the age of 23, De Gea has benefitted immensely from a continued run in the Manchester United squad and that has began to show in his performances. An image of serenity and calm even in tightest of situations David De Gea has slowly but surely claimed the spot as United’s number one goalkeeper this season.

The Spaniard feels that all his training and hard work is starting to pay dividends.

He continued by saying: “I’m more confident and feel I’m playing consistently because I’ve had a prolonged run in the team. But training well and having a good mental attitude brings its rewards.

“Everything you put in, you get out. That is what you’re seeing now – I’m very happy with how I’m playing.”

United recently set a new record of the most wins in the first 30 matches of the Premier League with 25 after their 1-0 win over Sunderland and all this is in no small part down to United’s strike force and the form of their young goalkeeper David De Gea.
